Salmon Run feels like the main innovation Splatoon needed, a fun player-vs-environment mode that taps into the teamwork aspect of the game without the pressure of the competitive modes. Throughout, you'll need to protect teammates, especially as they take their spoils back to a safe depository. There are seven types of Bosses, each requiring a different tactic to defeat - for some, you'll need to divert their attention so allies can splat them, while others can only be defeated by specific types of attack. Available for both local multiplayer and online (once you've completed a couple of training missions), teamwork is a must as you hold back regular grunt Salmonids and hunt down Boss Salmonids to collect their precious Golden Eggs. A new co-operative mode, this sees four players team up to defeat the new threat of the Salmonids (and steal their delicious eggs for the sketchy GrizzCo). Luckily, that's where Salmon Run comes in.

This level of spatial awareness and observation gives Splatoon 2 a more cerebral, almost Portal-like flair, which proves a very welcome touch. One area sees you needing to clear out enemies, spray ink through grates on a wall, then line up the right procession of speed pads in order to propel yourself to the vertical path you've created, switching to squid form in the nick of time to swim up the wall. They're as much puzzles as they are shooting galleries, testing your mastery of tactics and navigation tricks in addition to mere reaction time.

Pleasantly, the maps aren't designed for mindless gunplay. Environmental tools have changed, too – inkrails now allow you to shoot as you grind along them, while speed pads catapult you around the areas like an inkstained pinball. It serves to introduce new weapons, such as the new category of dual-wield handguns, allowing you to run around spraying ink like a the star of a PG-rated John Woo film, and the Goo Tuber, which holds an extremely long charge before unleashing a powerful attack.
